It was a popular beach even during the Portuguese rule. Many came here in May and June to escape the pre-monsoon heat. The rich locals came to the beach for their mudança (change of air). There used to be a beachfront bandstand where the performers sang fados (Portuguese songs) and Konkani dulpods.
Then the hippies arrived. It was the hippies who really globalized this beach. Calangute Beach is now popular throughout Asia.
